# Download Stonqs

Free for macOS, Windows and Linux. No account, no sign-up, no email address. Pick the build for your computer: on Windows, the Microsoft Store is the simplest. Every release is also published on GitHub, with a SHA-256 digest next to each file.

## macOS

Your system

[ Apple Silicon](https://github.com/vvvlladimir/stonqs/releases/latest/download/Stonqs%5Fmacos%5Faarch64.dmg) [ Intel](https://github.com/vvvlladimir/stonqs/releases/latest/download/Stonqs%5Fmacos%5Fx64.dmg)

Apple Silicon is any Mac from late 2020 on. Older Macs are Intel.

On a Mac, Stonqs needs one Terminal command after installing. Without it, macOS reports the app as damaged. [How to do it, and why it's safe](https://stonqs.app/download/#macos)

## Windows

## Installing on macOS: one command

Stonqs isn't signed with Apple's paid developer certificate yet, so macOS won't open it the first time. Usually it says the app “is damaged and can't be opened” and offers to move it to the Trash. Don't. The app is fine; that's simply how macOS words it for any app without Apple's signature. One command in Terminal sorts it out.

1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Stonqs into the Applications folder.
2. Open Terminal: press ⌘ Space, type Terminal and press Return.
3. Paste this command and press Return. If it worked, you'll see no output:
4. `xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Stonqs.app`
If it answers “No such file”, Stonqs isn't in Applications yet. Do step 1, then run the command again.
5. Open Stonqs from Applications as usual. You need this once after each download from this website.

### What the command does

macOS puts a “quarantine” mark on every file downloaded from the internet, and Gatekeeper checks each marked app for Apple's signature. The command removes that mark from Stonqs.app and nothing else. It doesn't change any system setting, and Gatekeeper keeps checking every other app.

### Why it's safe

Stonqs is open source, so anyone can read the code it's built from. Every release is built by GitHub Actions from that public code and published with a SHA-256 digest next to each file, so you can check that your download is the published one. If you'd rather not run the command, you can build Stonqs from source yourself. Signing with an Apple certificate is planned, and then this step goes away.

Prefer not to use Terminal? After a first attempt to open the app, System Settings → Privacy & Security sometimes shows an Open Anyway button for Stonqs. With the “damaged” message on Apple Silicon Macs it usually doesn't appear, which is why the command is the reliable way.

## System requirements

### macOS

macOS 12 or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel.

### Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

### Linux

x86-64: Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 or newer for the .deb, RPM-based distributions for the .rpm, or the AppImage.

## The warning on first launch

The alpha builds on GitHub aren't code-signed yet, so macOS and Windows warn that the app comes from an unidentified developer. That's expected, and signing is planned. Until then:

- **macOS**: On macOS, move Stonqs to Applications, then run this once in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Stonqs.app How to do it, and why it's safe
- **Windows**: On Windows, the copy from the Microsoft Store is signed by the Store and opens without a warning. With the installer, when SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway.
- **Linux**: On Linux, make the AppImage executable first, in the file's properties or with chmod +x Stonqs\_linux\_x86\_64.AppImage

## Checking your download

The GitHub releases page shows a SHA-256 digest next to every file. Compute the digest of the file you downloaded and compare the two (the Microsoft Store checks its own copy):

- **macOS**: <code data-astro-cid-7yeekmkn>shasum -a 256 Stonqs\_macos\_aarch64.dmg</code>
- **Windows (PowerShell)**: <code data-astro-cid-7yeekmkn>Get-FileHash Stonqs\_windows\_x64-setup.exe</code>
- **Linux**: <code data-astro-cid-7yeekmkn>sha256sum Stonqs\_linux\_x86\_64.AppImage</code>

### Updates

Once a day, Stonqs asks GitHub whether a new version is out. If there is one, the app shows what's new and waits: install it now, later, or skip that version. A version that fails its signature check is refused. A copy from the Microsoft Store asks the Store instead and is updated by it: the app's button opens the Store page, where the Store installs the new version. A version reaches the Store only after Microsoft has certified it, which can take a few days. You can switch the daily check off in the settings.

### Building from source

Stonqs is open source under the AGPL-3.0\. If you'd rather not trust a ready-made build, the contributing guide on GitHub shows how to build it yourself.

[Build from source ](https://github.com/vvvlladimir/stonqs/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md)

## Getting started

1. Open Stonqs and explore the demo portfolio: three years of made-up history, kept apart from your own data.
2. Create your own profile. Give it a password if you want the database encrypted.
3. Switch on a source for prices and one for exchange rates, then import your broker's export.

## Your download has started. One more step on macOS

1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag Stonqs into the Applications folder.
2. Open Terminal: press ⌘ Space, type Terminal and press Return.
3. Paste this command and press Return. If it worked, you'll see no output:

`xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Stonqs.app`

If it answers “No such file”, Stonqs isn't in Applications yet. Do step 1, then run the command again.
